A country manor beside a village church, the study lamp burning late over the estate books. The church clock had run a full half-hour fast for days, and no one had thought to set it right, so every hour the village took from it that night was a lie of thirty minutes.

INCIDENT REPORT. Walter Foss was found at dawn at his study desk, the iron candlestick beside his ruined head. The church clock that the household kept their hours by had run half an hour fast for days; the true hour was always later than the clock declared. Five of the manor's people were awake that night.
