Code Stories

A code story is a case where the cipher was not the puzzle. It was the evidence.

Every file in this section turns on a real message that someone tried to hide and someone else took apart. A queen writing to her conspirators in an alphabet she believed was unbreakable. A killer mailing symbols to a newspaper. A telegram that pulled a country into a war. In each one the cipher held or it failed, and what followed was a trial, an execution, a manhunt, or a change in history.

These are not puzzles to solve. They are accounts of what happened when someone else did, written from the record: dates, names, and the actual text where it survives. The National Archives still holds Mary Stuart's ciphered letters, which is why we can say what her code looked like instead of guessing at it.
