THE SNOWBOUND LODGE

The snow lay clean to the gate by nine. By dawn a guest lay dead, the snow still unmarked.

A hunting lodge cut off by the first hard snow of the season, the drifts piled clean against the doors. One great fire kept the hall, and beyond the windows the white lay smooth and unbroken to the gate. Whatever happened that night happened to those already inside, for no one crossed that snow.

Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.

INCIDENT REPORT. Hector Pyne was found at dawn in the trophy hall, struck once with the iron poker from the great hearth. The snow had fallen clean to the gate by nine and lay unmarked till morning; no track broke it in either direction, so no soul came or went. Five of the party were awake in the lodge that night. Each gave an account of the long cold hours. One of them swears to a walk the unbroken snow proves was never taken.
