He swore he caught the nine o'clock and was gone. That train ran two hours late.
A country railway halt after dark, one lamp burning on the empty platform and the signal box aglow down the line. The night express ran two hours behind that evening, held up the line, so the nine o'clock did not leave till eleven, whatever the timetable promised.

INCIDENT REPORT. Walter Reed was found before dawn in the booking hall, struck down with the heavy signal lamp. One of them anchors an alibi to a train that had not yet left the platform.
