THE RAISED DRAWBRIDGE
The bridge went up at dusk and stayed up. One man swears he crossed it at midnight.
An old moated castle kept as a private house, the drawbridge hauled up at dusk and chained till morning. Within the walls a single torch burned on the keep stair. With the bridge raised, the gatehouse beyond the moat stood as far away as the moon, and no one passed to it that night.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Ambrose Foss was found at dawn on the keep stair, struck down with a heavy iron sconce. The drawbridge had been raised at dusk and not lowered till morning; the gatehouse beyond the moat could not be reached by any living foot. Five of the household were awake within the walls that night. Each gave an account of the dark. One of them swears to a crossing the raised bridge made impossible.
