He swore they sat by the fire till it burned low. The grate held a week of cold ash.
A shuttered country parlour on a raw night, where the grate sat full of undisturbed ash and no fire had been lit for days. The cold had driven the household into coats and early beds, and the room where the master worked stood as chill as the yard outside.
