She swore she drew the dawn water. The well had stood dry and sealed for a week.
A farmstead courtyard where the old well had run dry a week before and been boarded over for safety. The household carted its water from town and kept what little they had by the kitchen fire, and no bucket had touched the sealed shaft in days.
