He swore he fetched a book from the east wing. It was locked, the key held elsewhere.
A great house whose east wing had been locked and shuttered for the season, the steward holding the single key on his ring all night. The library lay beyond those locked doors, dark and untouched, while the household kept to the warm rooms at the other end.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Ambrose Sefton was found at dawn at the foot of the main stair, struck down with a heavy stair-rod. The east wing had been locked all night and the only key hung on the dead steward's own ring; no one else could have passed into it. Five of the household were awake. Each gave an account. One of them claims an errand into the sealed wing the locked doors forbade.
