THE TIDE-CUT CAUSEWAY
He swore he walked to the chapel on the rock. The tide had drowned the path at dusk.
A small island chapel reached by a stone causeway that the tide swallowed whole each evening. By dusk the path lay under deep water and the rock stood cut off till the small hours, the shore lanterns burning along the sea wall above the dark tide.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Edmund Wren was found at dawn on the shore by the causeway head, struck down with a heavy capstan bar. The tide had covered the stone path from dusk; the island chapel could not be reached on foot all night. Five of the shore folk were awake. Each gave an account. One of them swears to a walk out to the rock the drowned causeway made impossible.
