THE LATE LETTER
He let slip he'd read the letter the night before. It was posted only that morning.
A village parsonage the night a fateful letter was still in the writer's own desk, not yet posted. It would go to the box only at first light and reach no reader for a day; whatever it said was known that night to no one but the hand that wrote it.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Edith Cole was found at dawn in her sitting room, struck down with a heavy brass candlestick. A letter she had written lay unposted in her desk and went to the box only at first light; it could not have been read by anyone the night before. Five of the village folk were awake. Each gave an account. One of them speaks of the letter's words before any eye but hers had seen them.
